LEED EB® Certification: First in Alexandria, VA

(March 17th ALEXANDRIA, VA) – Mt. Vernon Avenue LLC, a real estate development firm, announced today that its Human Services building at 2525 Mt. Vernon Avenue has received LEED® Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council under the Existing Buildings (EB) Rating System.

It is the first LEED EB building in Alexandria and the eighth in the State of Virginia.
""We are very proud to bring Alexandria its first LEED certified building for Operations and Management." said Larry Hirsch, Managing Partner of the project for Mount Vernon Avenue. “ It was a true private/public partnership between owner and tenant: Mt. Vernon Avenue, LLC and the City of Alexandria.
The Human Services building is a 2-story, 42,300-square-foot office building situated in the Del Ray area of Alexandria. Mr. Hirsch and Mr. Scott Mitchell presented the building’s LEED plaque to the tenant, the Department of Human Service, at a celebration attended by Mayor Euille.
The project team incorporated energy efficient lighting with reduced mercury content; environmentally sensitive cleaning products and practices; low-flow plumbing fixtures for reduction of indoor potable water use; and HVAC upgrades resulting in reduced energy use. The team was awarded innovative credits for replicable training practices, extensive recycling procedures, efficient, low mercury lighting and sustainable purchasing.
Green building consultant, Suzanne Kelly, of LEEDAdvisors managed and coordinated the LEED certification process for the building. Green team leaders for the City of Alexandria were Linda Dell and Chris Washington.
The LEED® Green Building Rating System is a voluntary third-party rating system. The U.S. Green Building Council is the nation’s most important coalition of corporations, builders, universities, federal and local agencies, and nonprofit organizations working together to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.
